Jab Harry Met Sejal is not receiving very good reviews (Pic Courtesy: Twitter)

Movie Review Preview told you sometime back how Shah Rukh and Anushka starrer Jab Harry Met Sejal has received a not-so-good response from the masses. Gone are the times when every Shah Rukh movie was expected to hit gold and would be loved by one and all. Here’s digging into the matter….

1. From the trailers and the promotions, it is clear and obvious that this film is a love story set in the backdrop of foreign land. Think of it, even the title says Jab Harry ‘MET’ Sejal. So, it is a boy-meets-girl story, the two spend some time in a beautiful videshi land, want to be good friends, but cupid does its job. There’s song and dance too. Hence, the viewers don’t see anything NEW or BREAKTHROUGH in it. ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ looks not fresh, but rather a stale biryani made of slivered ‘Jab We Met’ pieces dropped in the pan of a ‘DDLJ’ storyline, with toppings of ‘Fanaa’, and ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, and garnished with ‘Love Aaj Kal’.

NOTHING NEW? Jab Harry Met Sejal promises a love story amidst a beautiful landscape, some comedy, some drama and lots of emotions (Pic Courtesy: Twitter)

2. Bored of eating the same dish everytime, the Indian audience is now relishing more offbeat cinema, like ‘Rustom’, ‘Dangal’, ‘Fukrey’ and even the upcoming ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’. Fresh script, unique filming (love stories in breathtaking phoren land is now,  not-so-breathtaking after all) and an issue-based film is what we like more. Enough of escapist cinema, bring on the new menu, please.

3. With fresh scripts, comes in the preference of fresh pairing too. And a very old hero (Shah Rukh Khan is 51, by the way, Anushka is 29) along with a very young actress does not look too cool until and unless it is a ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ kind of a script. Even Aamir played a tour guide in ‘Fanaa’, and Vani Kapoor in ‘Befikre’. They were both young actors and did not have a major age gap with their co-stars. Come on Bollywood, please stop this old hero and young heroine trend.

4.  One close look at Bollywood, and we realise that stereotypes are so engraved in all our films, that sometimes the audience gets sort of fed up with the repetitions. A Punjabi may not always speak in a theth-punjabi style. Same for a Gujarati or a South Indian. Jab Harry Met Sejal has Anushka playing a Gujju and has all those stereotypical Gujju traits. Boring, very boring.
