Great Grand Masti, the third seqence of the Masti franchise, is sadly off to a poor beginning. Of all the three films in the Masti series, this one, starring Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani ,Vivek Oberoi and Urvashi Rautela, had the highest budget of about Rs. 42 crores, yet it seems to have crashed at the Box Office. The first day collection of the adult comedy flick is Rs.2.50 crore net approx (2.5 cr in today’s times is actually, nothing, right?)  The movie opened on an average note of 15% to 20% at the Box Office. The film, unfortunately, could not create any buzz at the box office and will have to struggle to make a mark. Movie reviewers too have not hailed the script. Neither are the Twitter reviews faring so well.

The original 2004 Masti was a full-on entertainer and a superhit. Grand Masti, released in 2013, despite not being too high on its content, grossed in Rs 100 crores (close to SRK’s Chennai Express). But Indra Kumar’s Great Grand Masti failed to make a mark. And even a 100 crores, right now, looks like a dream for this flick.

COMPARISON WITH OTHER ADULT COMEDIES

Of Bollywood’s adult comedies released so far, Great Grand Masti seems to be the lowest opener. Here is a comparison with the first day collections of popular adult comedies:

Masti: Rs. 1.8 crore net approx
Grand Masti: Rs 12.2 crore net approx
Mastizaade: Rs 3.39 crore net approx.
Kya Kool Hai Hum 3: Rs. 5.50 crore net approx.
Great Grand Masti: Rs. 2.50 crore net approx.

WHY SUCH POOR COLLECTIONS?

Possible reasons could be:

– Comparison with previous Masti films
The first of the Masti series was a complete entertainer. It was like the DDLJ of adult comedies. One could see it many times. The second instalment surprised all by entering the Rs 100 crore club. Perhaps there was a lot of sexpectation… oops expectation, from the third one, but it couldn’t meet all.

– Nobody messes up with Salman, you see.
The clash with Sultan could also be viewed as another possible reason for this low start. In an era where many Hollywood films’ release was put on halt to avoid clash with Salman’s blockbuster, maybe this was not the ideal time to release this film.

– Film was leaked
The movie leaked online because of which it was compellingly released a week earlier than scheduled, but the efforts were futile. Even Udta Punjab didn’t gross in the amount the filmmakers had expected due to its online leak, then how could a film like Masti not be affected?
