OZ the Great and Powerful Review

OZ the Great and Powerful Review

Disney‘s ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ is a feast to eyes. Its a 3D marvel for kids. We have been watching many movies of evil witches and wizards but OZ always had a special place in our hearts. In ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ director Sam Raimi has tried to create a marvelous movie out of few decade old story the Oz. In new Oz the Great and Powerful we have some new characters like cute flying monkey, China doll etc. Movie is shot with beautiful background and not too bad 3D effects. First 20 minutes of the movie has been shot in black and white as a
reminder and respect to the old OZ movie. In the new Oz the Great and Powerful our hero is a charmer and a con man who knows how to walk through any difficult situation through his cons and second hand magic tricks. Seldom, things get out of hands of our hero, who can’t stay out of trouble and finds himself in a bad situation time and again. Oz the Great and Powerful is not Narnia or Enchanted, its a movie with a simple plot of good witch against the bad witches with the help of a con man.

Movie starts with a magician Oscar (James Franco) trying to charm a girl by playing his best trick on her. Within few minutes of having his way to the beauty’s heart, he is confronted by the boyfriend of another desmsell. When he tries to escape from the fight on an air baloon, he is whisked away by a tornado to the magical land of OZ. There, he encounters Theodora (Mila Kunis), a witch. She tells him about the prophecy about his coming to their land and save them from the bad witch. She takes him to the palace to meet her sister Glinda (Michelle Williams) the second witch. Glinda conspires and send Oscar to kill the third witch Evanora (Rachel Weisz), who was suppose to be the bad witch. On his way Oscar saves a China girl and takes her with him along with a flying monkey. When Oscar finds out that Evanora is actually a good witch and the savior of the people of OZ. He decides to help her and promises to fight the evil withces. Oscar‘s life is at stake. Now comes the raunchy climax to see if selfish oscar will help the people of oz or will he run away as soon as he gets a chance.

No doubt movie could have been better with a little more emotional drama and some sensible script of good and evil. James as a magician is not that effective, his acting is average. Mila Kunis doesn’t have much part to play but got some classy moments of the movie(and best so far). Rachel Weisz played her role as a bad witch so convincingly in the begining, that you will be awestruck when you actually realise, she is a good witch and not the murderer of her father. Rachel Weisz‘s acting is good but it was hard accepting her as a good witch. Maybe, the director needed a better cast to direct a beautiful movie, out of a better managed script. All in all Oz the Great and Powerful is a good time pass and an average movie. Watch it if you haven’t seen many 3D movies yet or if you are along with your kids. Oz world can be a special treat for the kids.
