Review: Phata Poster Nikla Hero: Rajkumar Santoshi keeps the comedy clean
Rating: 3/5 (Three Stars)

Another addition to the list of ‘Dabang Police Officer‘ by Shahid Kapoor aka ‘Inspector Vishvas Rao’ has made his comeback significant. Ileana D’cruz in the lead role wasn’t very pleasing but has done an average job portraying as a socialist in the movie. Some comic elements in the climax were worth praise and kept the movie clean and pleasant throughout. A good watch with a family.

Shahid Kapoor has acted well, delivered numerous emotions, performed an item number and what not but the lead actress Ileana D’cruz apparently had made no attempt at all. After her performance in ‘Barfi’, we expected something great but her personality didn’t match with the given character. Ileana was aptly chosen in the supporting role in Barfi but couldn’t take the burden of the lead role in Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. Rest, the plotline was respectably ok and the songs were fine too. A better starcast like Shahid and Amrita Rao ( Ishq Vishq and Vivah fame) or Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone could have done wonders to the film.

The movie starts with a daring act by Vishwas Rao (Shahid Kapoor) who jumps to save a girl from harassment (poster phadke). This is the only scene which would justify the title Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. Later, he as an aspiring actor appears for a portfolio shoot and is mistaken as a cop by ‘complaint Kajal’ played by Ileana (who later becomes his lady love). Coincidence, luck and lies turns this comedy story into a fully fledged drama and the twist comes when the truth is revealed. The movie gets serious in the second half but ends well with the climax. Sure, Rajkumar Santoshi deserves an applause but only if the script could justify its genre with more jokes and more characters that would have been commendable (Personally, i would love to see Rajpal Yadav in this movie).

If we talk about the negative points or the weakness in the movie, it would be nothing more, nothing less than the starcast itself. Ileana looks glamorous only in the songs ,acts over-dramatic at times and cribs irritatingly. (Alas!! Not everyone can crib like Kareena Kapoor so gracefully) She could have been replaced by a more lively actress. Also, though already the movie is full of brilliant actors in small roles, still the scope of exploring the humor better was left out. More jokes, double meaning dialogues and small funny acts could have made a difference.

Shahid, with his grand comeback as the ‘Chulbul/Dabang Police wala’ character is getting praised by the audience. In the item song ‘Dhatin Naach’ with Nargis, he gave us a glimpse of how amazingly he can dance. Nargis Fakri showed some groovy moves too. Whereas, Salman Khan’s guest appearance gave the chills when the movie was going slow. The introduction to the unseen character ‘mangloo’ saved the show giving some genuine Rolling-on-floor-laughing moments in the second half.

This year, when comedy and romantic movies are in trend, Phata Poster Nikhla Hero has a lot to offer in terms of entertainment but with low budget marketing and an eye-pleasing movie like ‘The Lunchbox’ as a competitor, PPNH isn’t likely to get the fame it deserves. Lunchbox (starring Irfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur) and Phata Poster Nikhla Hero genuinely offer you a pleasant script with minimal skin-show and a great family movie worth a watch.
