Karan Johar and Gauri Khan produced the film under Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment banners released on 19 October 2012 starring Varun Dhawan (as Rohan Nanda), Alia Bhatt (as Shanaya Singhania) and Siddharth Malhotra (as Abhimanyu Singh).
The movie revolves around St. Teresa’s High School involving (the ‘Tatas’ and the Bata’s Student) and the trophy of “Student of the year”. Flirtatious Rohan and Shanaya are childhood sweethearts but in a complicated relation whereas Abhimanyu makes the entry to St. Teresa’s High School and the journey begins.
Alia Bhatt, just 19 years old, real life daughter of Mahesh Bhatt is sizzling the screen with her outfits. Throughout the movie, she is adorned with glamorous designer labels and is about to deliver her first kissing scene on the silver screen with Siddharth Malhotra-the tough guy. She plays the role of school’s hottest & richest girl and only daughter of her twice married mother with 4 step sisters.
Whereas, Varun Dhawan, age 24, real life son of David Dhawan, plays the role of an aspiring Rockstar, son of the top industrialist trying to cope with parental pressure. In between the emotional scene like love, hatred, separation and competition all varun was expected to do is some decent acting and flash his muscular body. All in all, Varun with his choclate boy looks was able to connect to the audience a bit unlike aliya bhatt who looked like a plastic doll mostly her face painted white and lips with fire engine red lipstick flashing her skin in shorts and even scarf enhanced Bikini which was bit of too much and not required.
Siddharth Malhotra, shining star of the movie with his tough guy image plays a role of middle-class boy who creates havoc as soon as he enters St. Teresa’s High School. At first due to ego clashes, rohan and abhimanyu becomes enemy but after wasting around good 15-20 minutes of the movie they become friends with just so expected verbal spats and heartwarming moments. Things get messy when Abhimanyu falls for Shanaya and rohan finds shanaya cheating on rohan with abhimanyu. Revenge replaces Healthy competition, love replaces hatered and the story gets heated up for a while. If i say, film absolutely failed to show chemistry between friends and couple, that would be an understatement. If you are expecting a masterpiece like “Dil chahta hai” or 3 idiots or even “jaane tu ya jaane na“, be ready to face sheer disappointment.
The daring Sodo played by Kayozee Irani (the son of actor Boman Irani) played an important role. The movie took a turn when he questioned the very foundation of trithlon towards the finale stating that his talent wouldn’t count because people like him wouldn’t get a partner in dance-which was a part of winning trithlon and his intelligence alone wouldn’t do wonders, which nearly shattered Dean(Rishi Kapoor ).
The entire movie was just too predictable and tracks were remix of old classics ‘Papa Kehte Hain’, ‘Gulaabi Aankhen’, ‘Dafli wale ‘Disco Deewane’. You wouldn’t blink your eyes for a second during Kajol’s cameo in Disco Deewane and would be whistling straightaway.
Thank god ! Yes this movie had a few seconds dance performance by Kajol- the only exceptionally talented heroine unlike aliya who almost imitated Sonam Kapoor in “Aisha” but failed hysteriacally.
” After watching the way newbees have acted in the movie, I could bet ‘Rakhi Sawant’could have done a better job.”
Though you are likely to fall in love with the dean Rishi Kapoor’s wet and wild ways of trying to flatter the basketball coach Ronit Roy. Some happy moments with rishi kapoor deserves applause whilst the sad moments were breathtaking. The movie lost connection with the Indian audience instantly when the foreign traditions like college prom night and triathlon came into picture.
My suggestion: All those who plan to watch “Student of the Year”… either change your plans or Watch it for the rising stars.
Shanaya’s tomboy friend Shruti played by Mansi Rach, once a true friend but now manipulative to win the title of ‘Student Of The Year” was perfect on the role.
The head cheerleader Tanya -our very own Sana Saeed, who played the young Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, trying to pocket the heart of the uber rich Rohan performed way better than alia.(Though in skin showoff, she was in the top list! )
Karan Johar owes Rohan’s once sidekick buddy Jeet (Sahil Anand of Roadies 4 )and our favourite Manjot Singh (of Oye Lucky Lucky Oye ) as the ‘Bata’ Dimpy (who would leave you craving for more laughter)for their performance and saving the movie from being disasterously boring and predicatable . Or for that matter, the superb supporting cast of Rishi Kapoor,Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor , Manini De, Boman Irani, and Farida Jalal in brief yet extremely effective cameos.
“Well, we all make mistakes, dear, so just put it behind you. We should regret our mistakes and learn from them, but never carry them forward into the future with us.” –L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Avonlea
So we expect Karan Johar to get us a real flick next year (something like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “My Name Is Khan“)without any mistakes, like he always do. Infact this movie could have been far better with some decent heroine and more of Manjot Singh’s jokes and Sana Saeed . Duhh ! But to be a superhit the main cast would have to be eliminated!!! ouchh!!
Go for it for some escapist entertainment at it’s glossy best!
