Jon M. Chu would love to direct a sequel to ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ and has promised the follow-up would take the franchise to the “next level”
The ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ director would love to reunite with the cast – including Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Adrianne Palicki and D.J. Cotrona – to make a third movie if the sequel is successful and promises that the next installment would be much more high octane.
He told BANG Showbiz: “You know, it would be an honour [to do it], if fans went out to see it [this time]. And man I’d love to [make another one]. We have a lot of foundation with the characters here, so it would be really fun to take to the next level.”
The director – who took over the franchise from Stephen Sommers, who helmed 2009’s ‘G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’ – explained that ‘Retaliation’ is a partial reboot to the film series and thus features lots of expository scenes, but has high hopes for the proposed follow-up.
Chu said: “Because we’re kind of a sequel but not a sequel, reinvention and introducing new characters, we had to serve a lot of things to get the audience to connect the dots with the old ‘G.I. Joe’ and what we are now.
“But now it’s all tied together, I’d love to see [villain] Cobra be the ultimate villain and go crazy. I’d love to see some other villains come in to this as well, and other heroes come in to this. Just continue to build this giant world.”
‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ is out now.
