Luke Evans to play Dracula

Luke Evans will take on the role of the titular character in forthcoming film ‘Dracula’, which will see Gary Shore making his directorial debut

Luke Evans will play Count Dracula in a new movie reboot. The ‘Fast and the Furious 6’ star will portray the vampire in Universal’s forthcoming horror movie ‘Dracula’, which will be a remake of the studio’s classic 1931 motion picture of the same name.

Michael De Luca will produce the film, which looks likely to start shooting later this year, while Gary Shore will make his directorial debut on the project, Variety reports.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have penned the script, which tells the story of a young Prince Vlad – the inspiration for the Dracula character made popular by Bram Stoker’s iconic gothic horror novel – who aims to protect his family from a blood-thirsty sultan, but in doing so becomes the first vampire.

Alissa Phillips will be executive producer on the motion picture, which was originally set up for Sam Worthington to portray the titular character with Alex Proyas due to direct the project, but budgetary concerns meant production never got started.

Tom Hardy has also been linked to the role which eventually went to Evans, who is well known to Universal after starring as Zeus in ‘Immortals’, Apollo in ‘Clash of the Titans’, and the 33-year-old actor is due to portray villain Owen Shaw in ‘Fast and the Furious 6’.
